“Becoming” is an Inspiration
A person I’ve long admired for her advocacy for children, grace and leadership is Michelle Obama. She’s just released the hottest book in recent months, “Becoming,” which sold 725,000 copies the FIRST DAY in print, and was the best selling book of 2018.
I didn’t pick it up because of all the hype, but because Michelle Obama intrigues me as a person.
I loved her initiatives during the Obama administration to improve the quality of children’s meals and find solutions for the growing issue of childhood obesity. And she just seems like a classy gal I could learn some things from. I just finished Becoming, and – this doesn’t happen very often – I have a book hangover. I loved her gentle, compelling voice as she told her story of growing up in South Side Chicago, of her family, her loving brother and hardworking mom and dad, of striving to get her education and hit her career goals, and meeting this laid back guy with a funny name… Barrack Obama.
She showcased her love and admiration for Barack, and for her children – clearly her strength and character were a stabilizing force for her family through the extreme highs and lows of politics. She spoke to the challenges of being a person of color in her position, but was never preachy. Inspiring and beautifully done. 5 Stars.
